Day of Caring Volunteer Registration will be open May 1- June 30 Worksite Requests will be accepted May 1 - June 15 Get involved in the largest one-day community service event in Livingston County on Wednesday, August 6th! The Livingston County United Way’s Day of Caring brings together volunteers from across Livingston County to help neighbors in need, strengthen community bonds, and create lasting positive change. LCUW collects worksite proposals from local residents, seniors, schools, disabled residents and non-profit agencies. The work is often minor household repair projects, cleaning and yard work that the homeowner is not able to do on their own. Anyone can recommend a work site and are encouraged to apply for a neighbor or friend who needs extra help. Deadline for worksite projects is June 15th. Invite your friends, family, and co-workers to take part and make an impact on many lives in Livingston County at this year’s Day of Caring on Wednesday, August 6. Sat May 10 Howell Masonic Lodge 175th Anniversary

The history of Masonry is replete with individuals who were the heralds of their communities. Masonry in Howell begins with one such luminary by the name of Amos Adams. Amos Adams arrived in Howell, Michigan in 1835 and built the first home in the township on what was to become the corner of West Grand River Avenue and Walnut Street. Being among the first settlers of the new township of Howell, he was elected Justice of the Peace in April, 1836 as well as Treasurer and Surveyor of Livingston County. He opened up the Eagle Tavern and Hotel which became a central location for doing business within the village. In 1838, he built a sawmill as well located on the Shiawassee river.   Also in 1838, another brother mason, Gardner Wheeler would be the first physician to settle in the township. As the village was growing, seven brothers assembled to open a Lodge. On November 10, 1838, a dispensation was issued to these seven brothers to open a Lodge. A charter was granted by the Grand Lodge of the State of Michigan on January 10, 1850 for Howell Lodge No. 38. This was to be the beginning of well over 175 years of Masonry in Howell. In the decades that followed, hundreds have been members of Howell #38. The location has changed, on multiple occasions, within the city, however the vision and dedication of its members remains the same to this day. In the 1950’s and ’60s the Lodge met on the third floor of the First National Bank building on the southwest corner of Grand River and Michigan Avenue, however the present Lodge building was purchased and dedicated for use in 1971. There will be a formal gathering and re-dedication ceremony at 7:00 pm. The event will take place at 401 West Grand River Avenue, Howell,Michigan.

Join the Livingston Land Conservancy and the Brighton District Library from 1pm-3pm on Saturday May 10 as we officially dedicate the new public trail system at the Charles and Albert Parker Families Nature Preserve on library property, 100 Library Dr., Brighton. All ages and people are welcome - the event will include educational talks regarding the ecological restoration of the property underway, a guided (moderately easy) hike through the preserve a nature-themed bingo game for children and refreshments.

Art Shows How Local Youth View Mental Health Friday, May 16, 2025; Browse the Exhibit between 6-7:30pm The Howell Opera House, 123 W. Grand River Ave, Howell, Michigan 48843 Livingston County youth have much to share related to their perception of and experiences with mental health. They want you to see it, hear it, and talk about it. The Howell Opera House and the Livingston County Community Alliance are hosting the Youth Art Voice Exhibit on Friday, May 16. The public is invited to browse the art collection anytime between 6-7:30pm. Light snacks and refreshments will be served. Youth Art Voice encourages youth to explore and communicate what mental health means from their unique viewpoints and experiences. Art, in various forms, including photos, sculptures, drawings, paintings, poems, and music, are used by youth as a way of expressing themselves around this important topic. The Youth Art Voice Exhibit showcases the art, which will be on display at The Howell Opera House at 123 W. Grand River Ave in Howell on Friday, May 16 from 6-7:30pm. The exhibit is free. Youth Art Voice is much more than creating art. Youth have participated in a process of reflection around mental health. Those who have submitted artwork have discussed with the advisors about their artwork, explaining why they created it, sharing what it means, and discussing common themes that emerge. Many of the youth who have submitted artwork have stated that creating art has helped them to cope with their mental health and to have a better understanding of what it means to them and those around them. To keep the event safe for all, trigger warnings will be displayed as needed. A trigger warning is a statement notifying the audience about a piece of art containing potentially disturbing content. That content might include graphic references to topics such as sexual abuse, self-harm, violence, eating disorders, and others. Resources for local mental health services will be available at the event and mental health and prevention professionals will be on site to discuss and support reactions to any of the artwork and messages. The public is invited to attend the Youth Art Voice Exhibit and support local youth who have found their voices using art - art voices. The Livingston COMMUNITY PREVENTION Project (LCPP), the Livingston County Community Alliance (LCCA), and the Livingston Youth-Led Advisory Board sponsor the Youth Art Voice. LCPP is a collaborative of two agencies including Karen Bergbower & Associates & Livingston County Catholic Charities. The LCPP formed in 2008 and implements several prevention programs that proved to affect substance use and related problems. LCPP places an emphasis on youth-led prevention, engaging youth in the prevention process, while building assets and fostering success. Youth are encouraged to join local youth-led initiatives as well as participate in our countywide youth-led advisory board. LCCA is a countywide, anti-drug coalition that aims to unite the Livingston County community to reduce and prevent youth substance use and to live a healthy and drug-free lifestyle. Our purpose is to connect the Livingston County community to establish and promote healthy community norms concerning the use of alcohol, drugs, and tobacco. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Recovery Oriented Systems of Care, and the Community Mental Health Partnership of Southeast Michigan provide funding for this event. The community is warmly invited to a Celebration of Life and Benefit in honor of Dustin Crafton on May 17, 2025, at Cross W Ranch. This event will be a heartfelt tribute to Dustin’s life—his kindness, his laughter, and the lasting impact he made on those who knew and loved him. It will be a time for friends, family, and the community to come together in support and remembrance. Dinner will include pulled pork and a variety of sides for $20 per person (cash or check accepted at the door). All proceeds will go to support Dustin’s wife, Morgan, and their three young children Weston, Lillian, and Lincoln. A silent auction will also be held as part of the evening. Tue May 20 Recognition of Judy McGowan

Judy has inspired and help Seniors in keeping their body functioning into their 80s. I took a class from her 25years ago in Community Ed. And now have been doing her Senior exercise for the last 10 years. Her music collection is astounding and the exercises perfect. Not easy. It consists of line dancing 40 minutes, mat exercises 30 minutes and weights and a bit of yoga positions for 30 minutes. The seniors would like her to be publicly recognized if possible. Burgers, Booze, and Beats will highlight Cleary University’s 3rd annual Summerfest. Summerfest is open to the entire community – 21 years of age and older. It takes place on Friday, June 6th from 6 to 10pm at Lake Trust Stadium on Cleary’s campus in Genoa Township. Guests can sample an assortment of burgers and other creative sliders served from food trucks including Tim’s Gourmet Sliders, Griff’s Grill, and Hickory BBQ & Grill. Get ready for the 40th Annual Frank A. Urban Golf Outing on Saturday, June 21st at Riverbank Golf Club, located at 24095 Currie Road in South Lyon, Michigan! Hosted by the Knights of Columbus Fr. Battersby Council #7586, this community charity event starts with registration at 7 AM and a shotgun start at 8 AM. The $120 per player fee includes 18 holes of golf with a cart, lunch, a goodie bag, and a delicious dinner. Connect Five Veterans Foundation and 2/42 are proud to be hosting a ONE-NIGHT-ONLY showing of THE AMERICAN SOLDIER with Douglas Taurel. This poignant off Broadway performance is based on real-life stories and factual accounts from soldiers and their families, shared through heartfelt letters spanning our nation's history, from the American Revolution to Afghanistan. This moving play delves into the internal struggles and challenges faced by our military service members and their families upon returning from combat.  Why is this important? Mental Health & Post Traumatic Stress Awareness, along with Suicide Prevention, are at the core of our organization's mission, and hosting this play will enable us to reach out to a broader audience impacted by these critical issues.
